If I tried not to eat at restaurants this summer, or maybe not eat at all, I could finally, maybe, afford a Paul Smith clothing.

This store was making me very happy. My moody friend even walked up and asked if I needed help. Of course, it was with the same dead face, but I didn’t mind. At a front table were lots of T-shirts, bucket hats and bathing suits striped in shades of blue or red ($92). Below them, behind glass, were wallets ($83), small zip cases ($29), plus datebooks, notebooks and credit card cases in Paul Smith Trainers signature multicolored variegated stripes.

While I perused, the moody girl ordered food, which calmed me. Maybe she is one of those people who becomes grumpy when they are hungry. She called a restaurant, asked for a chorizo quesadilla, then slammed down the phone.

The era of the superskinny hipster jeans is finally over. At Dior Homme, the label that arguably started that trend several years ago, there was nary a tight trouser in sight. The designer Kris Van Assche showed Paul Smith Trainers, in what was probably his strongest collection to date. His ultra-lightweight jackets made references to tailoring construction (and deconstruction) and seemed purposely unfinished; the high-waisted, full trousers alluded to some of Van Assche’s previous experiments with volume, but in a more desirable way.

The show opened with a few dark suits — some with the sleeves lopped off — but eventually gave way to shorts made of necktie fabrics, beaded shirts and crinkly jackets. Understated luxury has been a recurring theme, and one that the Hermès designer Veronique Nichanian captured perfectly with washed linens and cottons and vintage-looking paisley and chain-printed silks. The earthy shades of taupe, gray and green on suits casually worn with cool espadrilles — Hermespadrilles? — proved that lack of pretension is the highest form of sophistication.
